Renting a Bike: A Form of Eco-Tourism

When people think of urban tourist activities, they think of bus tours, boat tours, and museum trips. Many people don’t realize that bicycle tours are an increasingly popular way of viewing a city. In addition to being more active than merely sitting in a bus, a bicycle tour provides participants the opportunity to stop when something catches their eye. In addition, bicycles frequently can go where cars and busses cannot go.

A side benefit of urban bicycle tours is that they are much more environmentally friendly than the bus tours that are so popular. Bicycles do not require any energy input that is not renewable. They last as long as the person riding them has strength left in their legs and air left in their lungs. Some will argue that bicycle tours are equally as environmentally unfriendly as bus tours. While this may be true in more remote areas or on bicycle trips, it holds less truth in urban environments.

In rural areas, bicycle tours are supported by large trucks that are capable of delivering the bicycles to the sites to be seen on a daily basis. This subtracts from the overall eco-friendly nature of bicycle tours. In cities, however, the tours don’t need the support trucks, as everything is right there.

Another popular option is the self-guided bicycle tour. These tours allow the riders to take as long as they’d like at a site that interests them but then move on quickly at something that doesn’t. An additional benefit to this method of tourism over bus tours is that things don’t go by as quickly. Also, the bicycle tour allows the participants to stop at things not written into the tours offered by busses.
