Preventing Bike Theft
Bike locks, just like any other locks, are designed to help people thwart thieves. They are designed to make it as difficult as possible or even impossible for a thief to take a bike. In some instances, the thief will notice that there is a locked bike by an unlocked bike and will automatically go for the unlocked bike, the path of least resistance. Not all bike locks are made the same or even designed for the same areas. Choosing the correct bike lock for your situation will help you thwart thieves at every turn.
When you buy your bike, it is important to take three easy steps that will make your bike less attractive to thieves, even before you put the lock on it. The first thing to do is mark your bike with a non-removable identifier. Once this is done, it is important to register or license your bike with the local law enforcement office. If a bike, much like a car, has a defining characteristic that makes it unique and easy to spot, thieves won’t want it as much because it’s easier to get caught with a distinctive bike.
Bike locks are extremely important for protecting your bike. If your bike cost $100, plan on spending $10 to $15 at least on the lock for it. As a rule of thumb, spend between 10 and 15% of the value of your bike on the lock for it. Also, look for a bike lock that has a theft guarantee of some sort. These are generally the better locks.
