National Bike Registry

The National Bike Registry is a group dedicated to providing law enforcement agencies across the country with a list of bike registration numbers. These numbers are used to help people recover their stolen bikes. The National Bike Registry, or NBR, has been helping people keep their bikes out of police auctions since 1984.

Of all of the stolen bicycles in the United States each year, 48% are recovered by the police. Unfortunately, only 5% are returned to their rightful owners. This is because of the lack of a system to identify to whom a recovered stolen bike belongs. For example, each car has a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which is registered with the license plates on the vehicle and the insurance. When a stolen vehicle is recovered, the police can run the VIN and determine to whom it belongs. Cars are required to be registered. Unfortunately, the same system does not exist for bikes. This makes it hard for police to return the bikes to their rightful owners.

The National Bike Registry attempts to help solve the problem of a lack of a registration system. Theirs is the only national registry that works in conjunction with police agencies. While the Stolen Bike Registry is helpful for people recovering a bike in their area, the NBR can help a person recover a bike that has been moved over a vast range.
