Many people stop using their bikes in the winter, so the question frequently has something to do with where to put the bike in the winter months. One of the worst things that can be done to a bike is leaving it outside all winter exposed to the elements.
When a bike is left outside all winter and exposed to snow and sleet and ice, corrosion and other negative influences, bad things happen to it. The liquid that gets on and in the bike will freeze and cause various parts not to work. Water, when it freezes, expands and so it will cause parts of the bike to work incorrectly or not to work at all.
Once it has been determined that a bike can’t live outside all winter, the question turns to where to store it. Many people have outdoor sheds that are still cold even though they shield the bike from the elements. If this approach is chosen, the bike needs to be dried out in a warm environment if it gets wet at all. The water should not be allowed to stay in the bike and freeze over.
One of the best places to allow a bike to dry out is a basement. This is also a great place to store a bike. The basement is warm and will keep the bike away from the elements completely. It will also allow the bike owner to perform any necessary maintenance or repairs on the bike without freezing.
