Unicycle Fun

Bicycles are a common sight in almost areas of the world, from rural Chinese villages to the congested streets of New York City. Much less common, of course, are their one-wheeled cousins.

Unicycles have been around since the 19th century, when the technology needed to make them work was slowly developed. Although they may look simple, unicycles actually present unique problems of design, and they only truly became a possibility when riders of the old-style “penny-farther” bikes (those with larger wheels in the front and a smaller one in the back) figured out how to ride with just the front wheel.

The unique challenges of balance and control required by a man-powered, single-wheeled vehicle quickly led to an interest in off-road cycling in the late 1800’s. This in turn gave rise of the muni, or mountain unicycle, of which many examples still exist today.

Other styles of unicycle include:

  • Freestyle - used in skills routines, these models are generally more inexpensive and less physically sturdy.
  • Trials unicycles are essentially the BMXs of the unicycle world, demanding stronger components and construction
  • Touring - Believe it or not, some enthusiastic individuals use unicycles as a means of long-distance transportation. Touring cycles have a larger wheel diameter and shorter cranks to increase speed and peddling efficiency.

Despite their difficulty in riding, unicycles are just as susceptible to being stolen as any bike. For more information on this unique and fun way of getting around, and for all your bike lock needs, contact the experts at A&J’s bike locks at 708-460-2999.
