Types of Bike Locks

When it comes to keeping your bike safe from theft, using a quality lock is the best defense that you can employ. There are a number of different types of locks and it might be difficult for the uninformed to determine what the differences are between these lock types. The most common lock types are cable locks, chain locks, and u-locks. Each of these types has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Cable Locks

The upside of using a cable lock is that it is light and flexible. This makes it easy to bring around and use at any time you need to quickly lock up your bike. The cable lock is reasonably strong and isn’t easy to cut through, but it is not the most reliable lock available.

Chain Locks

Chain locks are strong locks made of steel which allows them to provide more protection than the cable lock. The downside is that chain locks are heavier than cable locks, but it might be worth the added weight to have a lock that is harder for thieves to cut through.

U-Locks

U-locks are usually easy to spot because they are shaped exactly like the name. The lock consists of a u-shaped piece of metal that fits into a bar. These locks are the heaviest of the lock types but also provide the best protection from theft. They are also made out of steel making it extremely difficult to cut through.
