Preventing Campus Bike Theft

Bicycles are an ideal way to get around college campuses. They can travel on routes closed to cars, navigate dense traffic easily, and park directly at bike racks so you don’t waste time searching for a parking spot. Unfortunately, the fact that bikes are so popular on campus also makes these areas a hotspot for bike theft.

Since campuses are often filled with students coming and going, bike thieves can easily blend in and steal a bike midday or at night when no one is around. Because they are such popular locations for theft, it is important to always properly lock your bike while on campus.

Properly Locking Your Bike on Campus

Even if you are just dropping by a dorm to visit a friend or are rushing to turn in a term paper, never leave your bike unlocked. You may run in thinking, “I'll just be five minutes,” only to return and discover that your bike is already gone. One poor decision can be a costly mistake. Whenever biking to, from, or around campus, remember to:

  • Carry a sturdy U-Lock with you and secure your bike to a bike rack while you are away.
  • If it is late, try to lock your bike near other bikes in a well-lit area that is less likely to attract thieves.
  • Lock your wheel and frame to the rack together, not just one or the other. Use a cable lock to secure your other wheel to the U-Lock.
  • If you work on campus or are a grad student, ask your professor or department chair if you can bring your bike inside to your office. Many schools have special provisions for faculty, staff, and grad students.

With a sturdy bike lock and correct locking techniques, you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of theft.

Register Your Bike

Most colleges and universities are aware that bike theft is a major problem on campuses across the country. To respond to this threat, many schools have set up a bike registration service for people who bike to, from, and around campus. For many campuses, registering your bike is actually required by the university police department or parking services.
