If you are around a lot of bikers, you might have heard the term "hybrid" thrown around. Now, most bikers are not talking about the fuel efficient hybrid cars, but instead the hybrid bicycle. What is a hybrid bike? In essence, it is a bike that takes characteristics from both road and mountain bikes.
From mountain bikes, it takes the seat position. The nice upright sitting position in mountain bikes are so much more comfortable than road bikes, where you must crouch down to be more aerodynamic. The frame is much more sturdy and heavier. This is so that the bike can take more of the bumps that happen when riding on rougher roads and carrying more weight on top. The wheels, while not as thick and studded as mountain bikers are thicker and are less likely to pop than road bike wheels.
From the road bike it takes the much lighter wheel rims that weigh much less than mountain bike rims. The other call bike is made for going faster than mountain bikes and still tries to be more aerodynamic like road bikes.
The reason why many people are choosing to give up their road or mountain bike for a hybrid is because many people are starting to ride their bikes to work and leaving the car behind. If you ride a lot in town you need the speed of a road bike, but you need the durability of a mountain bike.
