Bike Seats

A long, tiring bike ride leaves you exhausted enough as it is. But an uncomfortable bike seat can turn what would otherwise be a healthy bike ride into a painful experience. As you become more and more worn out from struggling up those hills, you will probably start resting more of your weight on your seat. Any cyclist who has had to live with an uncomfortable seat knows how unpleasant that can become after a while.

Since so much of your cycling experience depends on the comfort of your seat, picking the right seat for you is an important decision. The exact type of seat that’s right for you might not be the same as your friends, but in general a harder, smaller seat is going to put a lot more pressure on you than a larger, softer seat.

Just like with mattresses, however, finding the right type of seat for you is a very personal thing. Some people might find a very soft seat gives too much and changes their spinal alignment. Others, especially cyclists concerned with speed and lightness, might prefer a small seat. Finding the right seat is just like finding the right clothes: it really helps to try them out.

Of course, having the best seat in the world won’t do you much good if you don’t keep it secure. One of the most important parts of your cycling repertoire is your lock. A good lock is invaluable, especially in cities with high theft rates. Be sure to know how common thefts are in your area, and never lock your bike to something that’s not solidly grounded.
