Bike-a-Thons

Bike-a-thons and other “thons” are generally successful ways to earn money for a charity, foundation, or other organization. The “thons” are basically pledge drives where volunteers or participants pre-register and gather pledges for donations based on the number of laps, miles, or completion of a course.

Any organization looking to organize a bike-a-thon will need a course for the riders, pledge sheets for the participants, and volunteers to staff the event. These volunteers may be also used to sell food and beverages for a little extra profit. After the event, the participants return to the people who have pledged and collect on the promises. Most people begin planning their “thons” about eight months in advance. This allows plenty of time to choose a course, find participants, and gather pledges.

One of the key things influencing the success of a bike-a-thon is the weather. Late spring and early autumn are the best times of the year for these events. It is important to choose a date when good weather is likely and people will enjoy outdoor exercise. Sunny, not too hot, and not too cold are the ideal weather conditions.

A bike-a-thon, if done well, can increase the visibility of a particular cause, organization, church, foundation, or other group. A bike-a-thon also helps a community get in shape. With careful planning, excellent volunteers, some appropriate advertising, and good weather a good deal of money can be raised for a charity or other organization.
