Bicycle Touring

There are many reasons to go for a bike ride: among others, practical concerns like getting to work or running errands, for sports and recreation, or just for pleasure. One type of ride that falls in between sports and pleasure riding is the bike tour. Touring means riding long distances, but the emphasis is on having a pleasant time, rather than competition. Before going on a tour, however, it's important to make preparations.

In some ways touring can be seen as a street cyclist's answer to mountain biking, preferring the pavement to rugged trails. Some mountain bikers, like hikers, stay out for days; but typical trips often last a day. Likewise, tours sometimes last only a day, but many tourers—especially in Europe—will go on trips lasting several days. Undertaking such a long trip requires stockpiling your necessities for the trip, double-checking all your equipment, and taking steps to keep your things safe.

Bicycle tours are often undertaken in groups, although experienced or brave cyclists might go it alone. In either case, it would be a good idea to bring a phone in case of emergencies. Tours lasting more than an afternoon will require bringing enough food and water along. Although tour cycling is more leisurely than racing, it is still physically active. Be especially sure to stay hydrated. Other necessities you should bring include toiletries, extra clothes, and sunblock and/or a raincoat as needed.

Undertaking a tour can mean putting your possessions at risk. By keeping your possessions in lockable containers and trying to keep them in sight, you can reduce the risk of theft. For the same reason, it is very important to have a good, sturdy lock to keep your bike safe.
